Karen M. Souza, 48, of Cotuit, died peacefully at home on January 7, 2017 surrounded by her family, after a courageous battle with cancer. The driving force of Karen’s life was her daughter and husband. She was the loving mother of Jamie, and the beloved wife of David for 18 years.
She was born in Winchester, and moved to Mashpee where she graduated from Falmouth High School in 1986. In 1991, she started her 25 year relationship with Moonakis Café - first as a waitress, then a manager, and eventually fulfilled her dream when she purchased the restaurant in 2016. She poured her heart and soul into making the restaurant not only a successful business, but also a very special, cheerful place to visit. People flocked to Moonakis not only for the wonderful pancakes, but to be greeted by Karen and her incredible smile.
That smile, along with a strong will, impressive work ethic, and a “never give up” attitude, were some of her trademark qualities. She loved spending time with family and friends on ski weekends at Waterville Valley, and April vacations on Sanibel Island, events that she looked forward to all year long.
It has been said that if you weren’t a friend of Karen, it’s only because you hadn’t met her yet.
In addition to her husband and daughter, she is survived by her mother, Diane Moore and husband Doug of Mashpee; her sister Beth Pendergast and husband Michael of N. Falmouth; her niece Allison; her nephew Jack; her stepmother June Duffy; and a large extended family and many friends. She was predeceased by her father Kevin Richardson.
Visiting hours will be from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm, Saturday, January 14, 2017 at Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 74 Algonquin Ave (at Route 151), Mashpee. Burial is private.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made for Jamie’s education to David Souza c/o Cape Cod Five, 10 North Market St, Mashpee, MA, 02649.
