Katharine Rose “K.R.” Hanley, 87, of Falmouth and formerly of Syracuse, NY, passed away at the JML Care Center on Sunday, October 13, 2019. She was born in East Orange, NJ to the late James L. and Elizabeth (Ryan) Hanley. She is survived by her nephews: Emil D. Tietje, III, James H. Tietje, Francis J. Tietje, and Christopher J. Tietje; a niece, Marion E. Buscher; nine grand nieces and nephews and 4 great grand nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister and brother-in-law, Eleanor E. and Bud Tietje, and her uncle, Msgr. Francis X. Ryan.
K.R. was a 1954 graduate of Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart in New York and went on to earn her doctorate of philosophy from the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium. She was the first tenured woman professor at Le Moyne College in Syracuse, NY. She taught there from 1961-1997 until her retirement as professor emeritus of philosophy. She was internationally admired and loved for her contributions as a scholar, teacher and author. Among her many works, KR was known for her translations of several plays of the French philosopher, Gabriel Marcel and she published a book of his plays, Dramatic Approaches to Creative Fidelity. She also authored a text book with J. Donald Monan, S.J. called A Prelude to Metaphysics. She was well-known for founding the Le Moyne Ski Club. Visiting hours will be held from 9:30-11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17th at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 475 Main Street, Falmouth MA. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12:00 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Church, 511 Main Street, Falmouth MA. Burial will be on Friday, Oct. 18th at 1:00 in the Gate of Heaven Catholic Cemetery in E. Hanover NJ.
