Kathleen “Kathy” Mays

Kathleen “Kathy” Mays (Coughlan) of Mashpee, formally of Pocasset, MA passed away April 28, 2020 at the age of 83 surrounded by people she loved.

Kathy was born on July 18, 1936 in Brockton to John and Kathaleen (Kelleher) Coughlan. Kathy was raised in Abington MA and graduated from Notre Dame Academy. She earned her undergraduate degree in Math from Albertus Magnus College and received her master’s degree in Education from Fairfield University.

Kathy first worked in the Wright Brother’s Wind Tunnel lab at MIT during her college summers and after graduation until she left to raise her family. Kathy later taught high school Math in CT, supported the Falmouth Enterprise computer system, and then landed her dream job as a database administrator at NOAA National Fisheries in Woods Hole, MA. The highlight of her career at the Fisheries was a trip aboard their research ship monitoring the onboard computer system.

Kathy enjoyed tennis, bridge, gardening and most importantly spending time with her family. Kathy was the beloved sister of the late Mary Joan O’Connor and her husband Tom of Merrimack, MA, Clare Sullivan and her husband Dennis of Brooklin, ME, and John Coughlan and his wife Judy of Buzzards Bay, MA. She was the loving mother of Maureen Zarnfaller and her husband Erich of Milton, MA, Patricia Prendergast and her husband Kevin of Old Saybrook, CT, Anne Fitz and her husband Jim of Fairfield, CT, and Sheila Merrill and her husband Lee of Beverly, MA; cherished grandmother to Billy, Colin and his wife Courtney, Brendan and his wife Nikki, Dan, Sarah, Tom, Jimmy, Michael, Katie, and Emily; great grandmother to James, Kinsley, and Easton.

A celebration of life will take place later this year. If desired, contributions in Kathy’s memory may be sent to Alzheimer’s Services of Cape Cod & Islands P.O. Box 370 Hyannis, Ma 02601.
