Kurt A. Bartels, 92, of West Harwich, passed away on Friday, September 13, at Cape Cod Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband to Jacqueline G. “Gayle” (Caldwell) Bartels of West Harwich.
Born on April 9, 1927, in Santa Fe, Argentina, he was the son of the late August and Rosa (Lenzer) Bartels. Kurt grew up and attended school in Marbach, Germany.
In July 1956, he and his family moved to the United States of America.
Years after his arrival to the US, Kurt started his own plumbing & heating business, CBH Engineering. Most of his contracts were with the United States Federal Government at military bases and post offices throughout New England.
After years of maintaining his business, Kurt and his wife, Gayle, became the owners and operators of the Wishing Well Motel in West Harwich. After many years of ownership, Kurt and Gayle sold the business in 1985. In his retirement, he and Gayle spent winters in Bradenton, FL and travelled the world, visiting many different countries.
A proud man of his German heritage, Kurt was a member of the German-American Club of Cape Cod and also the German-American Club of Bradenton-Sarasota, FL.
In his spare time, Kurt enjoyed cooking, baking, sailing, wood working, and gardening. Above all, Kurt was most happy when he was helping others and in the presence of his adoring family.
In addition to his wife, Kurt is survived by his children: Ernest Bartels and his wife, Mary of Bradenton, FL; Col. Klaus Bartels, USAF and his wife, Lee of San Antonio, TX; Ronald Bartels of Rockland, MA; 5 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; and also several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Kurt is predeceased by his first wife Claire, his siblings: Gertrude, Carlos, and Werner.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 2nd at 1 pm at Pilgrim Congregational Church, Rte. 28 Harwich Port. Light luncheon will follow at the fellowship hall. Burial is private.
