Lauretta Kajda

Lauretta Jorgensen Kajda of Harwich, MA, loving wife of Adam Kajda for 70 years entered into rest on February 11, 2020.  Lauretta was born in Lynn, MA. on April 16, 1926 to the late Amanda and Frederick Jorgensen of Windsor, CT and Nantucket, MA.   She grew up in Windsor along with her 7 brothers and sisters and attended school in Windsor and 5th and 6th grade at Cyrus Pierce School in Nantucket.  She graduated from John Fitch High School in Windsor in 1944, and  attended Morse Business School for 2 years.  After completing her education, Lauretta worked as a secretary to Attorney John L. Bonee Jr. at Connecticut Mutual in Hartford for 6 years. 

She married Adam in 1950 and became a stay-at-home mom to their 4 children and took great pleasure caring for their children and grandchildren.  Lauretta was very creative and enjoyed cooking and baking.  Her love for baking came from her father who was a baker at Downyflake in Nantucket.  Lauretta enjoyed making memory books and engaging in numerous craft projects with her children and grandchildren.  She loved decorating and entertaining for the holidays, especially Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas.  Her grandchildren nicknamed her Gooma, a name which became affectionately used by all family members.  After her children were grown, Lauretta went to work for the Caring Connection in Windsor for 6 years and helped participants create special crafts to show in community craft shows.  In addition to her creative endeavors, Lauretta managed the books for family-owned liquor and wine stores from 1979 – 1993. 

In 1995, Lauretta and Adam retired to their vacation home in Harwich, which was close to her beloved Nantucket where she enjoyed many special family times.  She was predeceased by her 7 siblings and leaves behind her husband, Adam, and their four children and spouses - Sharon Horne of Tampa, FL and Nantucket, widow of the late Carl A. Horne; Stephen and Barbara Kajda of The Villages, FL; Linda Kajda of Harwich, and Lynne and David Luzusky of W. Suffield, CT; four granddaughters and spouses -Melissa Horne and Alex Daigle of Charleston, SC; Jennifer Horne of Charleston and Nantucket; Kelly Luzusky of Windsor Locks, CT and Heather and Ryan Wilson of Windsor Locks; and two great-grandchildren - Riley Wilson of Windsor Locks and Liam Daigle of Charleston.  Lauretta is also survived by several nieces and nephews: Evelyn Machung of Vernon, CT; Doug Morgan, Jr. of Albuquerque, NM; Susan McAllister of Colebrook, CT; Heidi Capodanno of Morris, CT; and Hollie Johnson of Atlanta, GA.  Lauretta loved dogs and had many special pet dogs during her lifetime.  She leaves behind her current beloved dogs, Millie and Puppet.  Lauretta and Adam are extremely proud of their children, their spouses, their grandchildren and their great-grandchildren.

At Lauretta’s request, she will be cremated. The family will announce plans for a celebration of her life to occur later in 2020.  Memorial donations to help animals can be made to the Connecticut Humane Society, 701 Russell Road, Newington, CT, 06111.
