1930 ∼ 2019
Lela McKean, 88, of Orleans, passed away July 3, 2019, with her family by her side. She was born to the late Alfred and Matilda Lowenstein, November 29, 1930, in White Plains, NY. Lela or “Lee” as she was known to many, graduated from White Plains HS in 1948 and received a BA in Home Economics from Wittenberg College in 1952. She was a member of the Delta Zeta sorority. She married the late Richard A. McKean in 1954 and they resided in Spotswood, NJ, before relocating to East Amherst, NY in 1972. She moved to Brewster in 1979 with her two younger children. Lela is survived by her three children: Richard McKean of Brewster; John McKean of Springfield, Oregon; and Patricia Jaworski of Harwich. She is also survived by fifteen grandchildren, twenty two great grandchildren, and by several nieces and cousins. She is predeceased by her sister Nancy Mitchell.
Lee was formidable in any word game and loved jigsaw puzzles, playing and solving them on her computer even though she was legally blind. She loved children and taught first grade in Mahopac, NY for a year and was a Cub Scout Den mother. Sewing, knitting, crafting, and quilting were her passion and she made a quilt for each arrival to our family, even though her sight was limited towards the end of her life. She was her harshest critic always trying to improve on what she made. Everything she’s made is considered a family keepsake. She was that type of person that others felt comfortable around and her home was the hub for her children and their friends growing up. Lela loved her birds, especially cardinals, and her flower garden. She loved Big Band music and listened to WOMR Sunday mornings.
A gathering to remember Lela will be held Saturday August 3, 2019 from 3:30 to 5:30 at Morris, O’Connor & Blute Funeral Home, 678 Main St., Harwich Center. Interment will be private at a later date. The family would encourage donations to the Orleans Fireman’s Relief Association or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in lieu of flowers.
