Luke P. Lally

Luke P. Lally, 88 years old, of West Barnstable, Massachusetts and Ft. Myers, Florida, passed away at his Florida home on September 25, 2019 after a brief illness. Luke was a brother, husband, soldier, father, sportsman, hunter, athlete,  yachtsman and a businessman throughout his long and productive life.

Luke was born in Boston, Massachusetts on May 27, 1931. He was the only son of Nora Teahan (Curley) of County Kerry, Ireland and Luke Lally of County Galway, Ireland. Luke had two half-siblings who pre-deceased him, Mary Curley Edgett and John Curley. He was always proud of his Irish heritage.

Luke attended Arlington High School and Northeastern University in Boston, MA on a hard-earned football scholarship. He set his sights on a 5-year business degree. He worked his way through Northeastern while playing football and balancing his studies. He joined the Army upon graduation and served for 4 years during the Korean Conflict. 

Luke met and married Jeanne F. McLaughlin of Dorchester, Massachusetts in April of 1955 Together they moved to Cape Cod where Luke became General Business Manager of The Cape Cod Standard-Times. Luke and Jeanne moved to Osterville in 1956. Together, 5 years later, the vision of their own company began in the basement of the family home on Bay View Circle in Osterville. 

Lujean Printing Company was formed, and the fledgling publishing company became successful due to long hours and a few but special hardworking employees. Luke and Jeanne also obtained a contract with Otis Air Force Base to publish their 1st of many newspapers. The Otis Notice still in publication today.   Luke, Jeanne, and their four children resided in Osterville throughout their lives. Each year the family would take many camping trips across the country to California, Florida and places in between. They also enjoyed the family boat, The Lujean, with trips to Boston, Nantucket, The Vineyard and local waters. Luke was a civic-minded individual and belonged to many organizations and clubs throughout the years. He was a member of The Elks Club, Lodge No. 1549 of Hyannis, The Osterville Vets Club, The VFW, The American Legion, The Moose Club, The Lions Club, The Rotary Club, The Hyannis Yacht Club, The West Barnstable Deer Club and others. He served on the Zoning Board of Appeals for the Town of Barnstable eventually becoming the Chairman.

Luke made yearly hunting trip to Maine, New Hampshire, upstate New York and even Canada. He enjoyed this activity well into his eighties.

Luke and Jeanne were married for forty years. Jeanne F. Lally pre-deceased Luke in death by 24 years. Luke was also pre-deceased by his youngest son, Mark O. Lally in June of this year.  Luke has three surviving children, Michael Lally (Candee Heimlich), of Osterville MA and Sarasota, FL, Suzanne Lally Rainey, (Earl) of Phenix City, AL and James Lally of West Barnstable, MA. Luke also has 7 beloved grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind a long-time companion Bonnie Hayslette of the Florida home.

Visiting hours are scheduled 10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on October 20th with a service to follow at 12:00 p.m. at the John-Lawrence Funeral Home, 3778 Falmouth Rd., Marstons Mills.  Burial in Mosswood Cemetery, Cotuit will immediately follow the service.
