Margaret McEvoy Wardrop
1952 - 2019
Marstons Mills -Maggie passed away on May 15, 2019 after living with metastatic non-small-cell cancer for the past three years, having survived breast cancer 15 years ago.
Maggie was born on May 18, 1952 at Cape Cod Hospital. She grew up in Osterville, attended Osterville Elementary School, and graduated from Barnstable High School and Cape Cod Community College.
She was married to her former husband, Carl D. Cooperrider, with whom she had two children, Jeb William Haslach-Cooperrider and Hailey Austin Cooperrider. The years raising her children were filled with much joy, celebrating birthdays and all the holidays with special traditions. Maggie was always involved in their many extra-curricular activities from Little League and Babe Ruth baseball games to drama club productions. Her devotion to Jeb and Hailey was her number one priority. She was so proud of how they have grown into successful, independent and compassionate adults.
Maggie loved her 20 years as a first grade teacher’s assistant at Marstons Mills East Elementary School. The staff was like a family and she considered it a joy and privilege to be part of all the wonderful learning and fun that took place there. For the past 10 years, she worked at Barnstable United Elementary School as a Special Education teaching assistant doing what she loved: helping students perfect their reading skills. At both schools her colleagues were her friends. They shared many fun celebrations!
Maggie was fortunate to enjoy trips to Germany, Italy, and Ireland, and to spend many vacations in her favorite spot, Sanibel Island, Florida.
Predeceasing Maggie were her parents Jessica Eldridge McEvoy, William P. McEvoy, Jr., and Eileen Mahoney McEvoy; her brothers William P. McEvoy III, and Daniel H. McEvoy; her sister Jessica M. Trimble; and sister-in-law Nancy M. McEvoy.
She is survived by her loving son Jeb William Haslach-Cooperrider, his wife Carmen, and cherished grandson William Thomas of Bavaria, Germany, her loving daughter Hailey Austin Cooperrider of Melbourne, Australia, her beloved husband and best friend David R. Wardrop, his daughter Lindsey Wardrop, his family the Lyons and Klvanas of Ridgefield, CT, her brother-in-law David C. Trimble of Centerville, MA and her sister-in-law Margaret M. McEvoy of Tucson, AZ.
She also leaves to carry on the McEvoy family legacy her brother James M. McEvoy of Centerville, MA and sister Mary M. Archer of West Hyannisport, MA.
Maggie (and her famous red dress) will be missed by her many nieces and nephews: Jessica and Andrew Fone, David and Kathleen Trimble, William and Jennifer Trimble, Patrick and Tharon McEvoy, Ashley McEvoy, Shawn and Valerie McEvoy, Holly McEvoy, Richard and Abigail Archer, Michael and Mara Archer, and Kathleen Archer and by many great-nieces and nephews, a special cousin Chris Henderson, and many close and fun friends, especially the esteemed members of the Ladies Literary Club.
She and Dave are grateful to Drs. Conrad Benoit, Philip Wade and Basia McAnaw, and nurses Kevin Smyth-Hammond and Mary Renzi for their compassionate care.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Osterville on Monday, May 20 at 11:30am. Visiting hours are omitted. Burial will follow at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Centerville. Attendees are welcome to wear red to honor Maggie’s irrepressible spirit.
Maggie requests that you become aware of all the causes of lung cancer to help erase the stigma of this disease. She was a lifetime non-smoker, and the cause in her case was a rare genetic mutation called EGFR. White ribbons represent lung cancer awareness.
Memorial donations in Maggie’s honor may be made to the Barnstable Education Foundation at PO Box 373, Centerville, MA 02632.
