Maria C. (Sousa) Moreira, of Bridgewater, died on August 15, 2019 at home, at the age of 64, after a long battle with cancer. She was the daughter of Evangelina (Sousa) and José Sousa. Maria was born and grew up on the Island of São Miguel, Azores. She made Bridgewater her home when she moved to the United States 50 years ago August 18 th . Maria attended school in Bridgewater before starting her long-time career in manufacturing.
Maria’s energy and good nature were contagious. She enjoyed visiting her beloved Azores and traveling to the Caribbean, Canada, Bermuda and Mexico. She loved sewing and was always ready to lend a hand to her family and friends with their sewing needs. She loved her family and especially cherished spending time with her grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking for her family, especially during the holidays. Maria was a dedicated wife and mother and was very engaged in every aspect of her family’s life. She had so much to live for and was determined to watch her grandchildren grow up. She tried every treatment her doctors recommended and was always so hopeful that the next treatment would help her through this. Maria was a warrior and fought this battle to the end like a champion. Maria was a devout catholic and communicant of St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Bridgewater. She was a member of the Portuguese Choir for a number of years and sang during the Portuguese Sunday mass. She was also an active member of the Portuguese Holy Ghost Club in Bridgewater. In fact, she hosted a Dominga in her house one year.
Maria was the loving wife of Dinis Moreira. Mother of Kevin Moreira and his wife Helene of Raynham. “Avó” to Jordyn, Tyler, Lily, and Kevin Jr. Sister of Maria J. Baganha of Bridgewater, Maria C. Boleates of Fall River, José C. Sousa of Bridgewater and the late Margarida Araujo. Maria is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, August 18, 2019 at the Prophett-Chapman Cole &Gleason Funeral Home, 98 Bedford Street, Bridgewater, MA, from 3:00-6:00PM. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 103 Center Street, Bridgewater, MA, on Monday August 19, 2019 at 9:00AM. Burial will take place immediately following the mass at St. Thomas Aquinas Cemetery.
