Marstons Mills – Maria Joan Alves, 55 and beloved wife of John W Mitchell died August 14, 2019. She was born April 3, 1964 in New Haven, CT to Pauline Smeriglio and Stepfather Alexander Eliseo. Maria is survived by her two daughters, Miranda and Chandler Alves. She leaves behind her loving sisters Robin Eliseo and Josephine MacDonald. Also left behind are her niece and nephew, Allyanna and Donovan Smith.
Maria was the middle child of 3 daughters. Robin, Maria and Josephine moved from New Haven to Cape Cod in their middle school years. She attended Sandwich High School. Besides her lifelong interest in music and fashion, Maria loved spending time at the beach, fishing as well as attending concerts, roller skating, and dancing.
After High School Maria began a career in Early Childhood Development. Through years of experience and certificate training, she quickly became a certified preschool director. Maria eventually accepted a Director position at Mission Hill Preschool in Roxbury. During this time Maria gave birth to her two wonderful daughters with their devoted father, David Alves of Wayland Massachusetts.
After several years, she returned to her beloved Cape Cod with her daughters. Maria became the Lead Director at a preschool in Falmouth. During this time, she reconnected and married her childhood sweetheart Timothy Messier.
Maria had an amazing gift and ability to connect with children. She ensured each child felt safe, empowered, and loved. She applied her talents to her own children, her niece and nephew, and to each child in her care. After some time, Maria’s passion for childhood education and development steered her toward helping children with autism. She became a certified ABA therapist and received her associate degree in Early Childhood Education. Most recently she worked as a Social Work Technician for Massachusetts Dept. of Children and Families, which she loved.
In 2011, Maria met the love of her life, John “Mitch” Mitchell. John supported and loved Maria as her best friend and companion throughout their 8-year relationship including her 15-month battle with cancer. John writes, “I feel honored, privileged, and blessed to have spent these last 8 years with Maria. I will always be in awe of her strength, courage, and determination. Our time together was much too short but I will forever have so many memories of her and all of the things that made her such a beautiful person.”
She will be truly missed.
