Mariana E. Buckley

Mariana E. Buckley

Mariana Ely Buckley passed away peacefully on July 7, 2020 – 10 days before her 98th birthday.  She was the wife of the late James Garfield Buckley of West Dennis and mother of the late James Garfield Buckley, Jr.

Daughter of the late Martin Henry Garrity III and Lillian McCullough Garrity, Mariana was born in Trenton, New Jersey on July 17, 1922.   A graduate of Rider University in New Jersey, and the Massachusetts General Hospital Language Clinic in Boston, Mariana taught at the Riverview School in Sandwich for over 30 years.  She was a reading specialist, teaching students with dyslexia.  Upon her retirement, in honor of her many contributions to the development of the students during the course of her career, Riverview named a wing of the school after her.  Following her retirement from Riverview, Mariana continued to tutor students in reading at Barnstable High School, as well as privately in her home.

Before moving to West Dennis, Mariana and her husband lived in Brockton and Braintree.  In Braintree, she was a Girl Scout and Brownie troop leader.  She was also a Regent of the Braintree chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and President of the Braintree Women’s Republican Club.  On the Cape, in her spare time, she was an active member of the Dennis Historical Society, as well as an elected member of the Dennis Republican Town Committee for many years.  Mariana also enjoyed playing golf, and in 2001, she was the President of the Cummaquid Golf Club Nine Holers.

Mariana is survived by her daughter, Prudence H. Goodale and her husband Dr. Geoffrey C. Goodale of Braintree.  Beloved by her grandson Geoffrey and his wife Julie, grandson Douglas and his wife Sarah, and grandson Nathaniel, her greatest joy was spending time with her three great-grandchildren: Ryan, Alexandra, and Eleanor.

Due to COVID-19 pandemic concerns, private services will be held for Mariana.  In 2021, there will be a celebration of Mariana’s life.   Once determined, details about the celebration will be posted on the Morris, O’Connor & Blute Funeral Home’s website (https://www.ccgfuneralhome.com/locations/yarmouth/).  In lieu of flowers, donations in Mariana’s memory may be made to the Cape and Islands United Way  (https://www.capeandislandsuw.org/give).
