Mary Alice Benway

It is with great sadness that the family of Mary Alice Benway announces her passing after a brief illness, on Saturday, February 24, 2018, at the age of 90 years.  Mary, fondly known as “Honey” to family and close friends, will be forever remembered by her brother, George Jr. (Carolyn), and their sons, George III (Elizabeth), Christopher (Carolyn), and Eric (Kelly), and grand-nephews, George IV, Eli, Jack, Liam, C.J. and Joseph.  Mary was pre-deceased by her sister, Patricia Benway, and their parents, George and Alice (Wiseman) Benway.

Born and raised in Newton, Massachusetts, Mary graduated from Newton Country Day School in 1946 and continued her studies at the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Montreal, Canada.

After a thirty-year career with the New England Tel & Tel Company, Mary retired in 1987 and resided at her family home in Mashpee and began enjoying her winters in North Palm Beach, Florida with her many friends.

Mary thoroughly enjoyed traveling the world, was an avid reader, especially the Boston Globe, which if you knew her political persuasion, you would find this very humorous.  She would banter with us all and hearty laugh or two would be a guarantee.  Mary was a loyal Red Sox fan and she would often retire to her bedroom where sounds of baseball and inspirational expletives would permeate the room.  Mary defied many odds, and to no one’s surprise, she was strong to the very end.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Jude’s Chapel, Christ the King Church, Mashpee at 11 a.m. on Saturday March 3, 2018. Reception will follow; relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, her family kindly suggests that gifts in Mary's memory be made to the Boys & Girls Club of Cape Cod, PO Box 895, Mashpee, MA 02649.
