Mary Bachelder Sproul
1926 ∼ 2017
Centerville, MA - Mary Bachelder Sproul passed into God’s arms on May 17, 2017 surrounded by her loving family. She was blessed with ninety-one years of a life well lived. She was truly a gift in the lives of all who knew her.
Mary was born on February 25, 1926, the daughter of Floyd and Alice Bachelder, and raised in Hallowell Maine. She graduated from The University of Maine with a degree in Physical Education. On August 21, 1948 she married Alton L. Sproul Jr. and began her life as a dedicated wife and mother. Alton was later proud to tell that they had “played ball" together since they were six years old, growing up in their beloved Hallowell. They shared sixty-four years moving from Maine to Vermont, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, back to Connecticut and Maine, then finally to Florida and Cape Cod. Alton pre-deceased Mary in 2012.
Raising a family of five children was a job that Mary did with perfection. She was their number one fan, their confidant, and caretaker. Her tireless energy and positivity was woven into every moment. Ball games and sports were foundational to family activities, as well as her personal ones.
Mary competed at bowling, hand-ball, paddleball, tennis, golf and bridge. Her knowledge and skills brought her many wins, trophies and much admiration. She was still playing eighteen holes of golf and bridge a couple of times a week in her ninety first year!
Mary's love of people was only matched by the love that she in turn received. Her first and forever best friends were her brother Richard Bachelder (Hallowell, ME) and sister Patricia Crowley (2001).
The greatest prides of Mary's life were her family and friends. She worked tirelessly to create everlasting bonds with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, extended family and countless friends. Prior to the days of technology, Mary wrote weekly letters, cards for every occasion, and regularly scheduled phone calls. She kept everyone in the family updated on each other and remembered every birthday and anniversary. In later years, she spent countless hours with her cell phone in hand sharing news, lending a listening ear, offering sage advice, and making each person in her life feel that they were the most important.
Mary is survived by her brother Richard Bachelder of Hallowell, Maine and her cousin Francesca Perazzi of Portland, Maine and Tina Santella of Vero Beach, FL; her son James and his wife Molly of Centerville, MA, William and his wife Gail of Cumberland, ME, David and his wife Nancy of Sylvania, OH, her daughter Carol Ann and her husband Duncan MacKenzie of South Portland, ME and her son Robert of Naples, FL. In addition she is survived by her grandchildren, Ryan and his wife Kristen of Keene, NH, Jonathan and his wife Leslee of Charlestown, MA, Ben and his wife Jenna of Goshen, KY, Keith and his wife Ann of Cumberland, ME, Alicia Keefer and her husband Ryan of Falmouth, ME, David and his wife Cheryl of Rockaway, NJ, Stephanie Stoler and her husband Victor of Toledo, OH Robert Kaiser and his wife Katie of New Kensington PA, and Olivia MacKenzie of Portland, ME.
In addition she was Great Grammie to Tessie, Brady, Dean, Cody, Maeve, Lizzy, Lucas, Victor, Osrick, Lennon (2014), Crosby, Grace, Richie, Lucy, Kiera, Vinnie, Joshua, Aiden and Sophia. She was a beloved aunt to several nieces and nephews.
Mary added a sparkle to each day. She was referred to as "cute little Mary” because she was. She brought laughter, fun, her competitive spirit and devotion to people wherever she went. She was a devout Catholic and staunch Republican. Her signature coffee cakes and pumpkin breads added a special element to any gathering. She leaves us with countless treasured memories and the sound of her laughter in our hearts.
A funeral service will take place at 11am on Friday, June 30th, 2017 at Sacred Heart Church in Hallowell, Maine.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Sacred Heart Church, St. Michael Parish, 24 Washington Street, Augusta, MA 04330 where Mary was baptized and is now laid to eternal rest.
