Mary R. (Carroll) Coughlin

1931 ∼ 2019

Mary Rita (Carroll) Coughlin of Centerville, MA passed away on January 31, 2019 at Cape Cod Hospital, surrounded by loving family.  She was married to the late James J. "Sonny" Coughlin for 54 wonderful years.

Born in 1931 to John F. Carroll, Sr. and Mary (Stingel) Carroll, Mary grew up and was educated in Arlington.  Mary worked to help care for her younger siblings and was employed at Better Homes and Gardens before becoming a full-time homemaker.  She and Sonny married in 1956 and started their family, residing in Medford and Newburyport for several years.  In 1969, they moved to Cape Cod where she spent the rest of her life.

Blessed with a larger-than-life personality that far exceeded her small frame, Mary lit up every room.  She made friends instantly and was proud of her Irish heritage.  A devout Catholic, she prayed the rosary daily.

She enjoyed family gatherings, camping, and baking, especially for her grandchildren.  Her brownies, hermit cookies, and famous Jello Cake will be missed.  In recent years, she adored her weekly visits to the Barnstable Senior Center and yearly trips to Fort Myers Beach, FL.

Mary will be dearly missed by her two daughters, Karen Gardner and husband Tom of Marshfield, and Debbie Geiler and husband Tom of Marstons Mills; her five grandsons, Bryan (Glenn Ann) and Michael Geiler, Jonathan and Brendan Gardner, and Dylan Coughlin; a granddaughter, Caitlyn Geiler; 3 great-grandchildren; beloved siblings Daniel and Gerald Carroll, Joan (Louis) Deluca, and Linda (John) Collins, as well as many nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her brothers John Jr., Edward, William, James, and Richard Carroll, and her two sons, James M. Coughlin and Kevin J. Coughlin.

Visiting hours will take place on Thursday, February 7th from 9-10:45 am at John-Lawrence Funeral Home, 3778 Falmouth Rd, Marstons Mills, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:30 am at Our Lady of Victory Church, 230 South Main Street, Centerville.  Burial will be at the National Cemetery in Bourne.
