Milton R. Soares, 91, of East Falmouth, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 9, 2017. He was the beloved husband of the late Arlene Soares for 45 years. Milton was the son of Manuel R. “Jake” Soares and Emma (Ferreira) Soares. He was born in East Falmouth on May 27, 1926.
Milton, known as “Millie”, grew up in Falmouth and graduated from the Lawrence High School. He joined the Navy at the age of 17 and participated in the Invasion of Normandy as a Seaman First Class, serving on the U.S. LST 310, landing at Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944. For his dedicated service in France during World War II, Milton received the la Legion d’Honneur Medal of Honor from the French Consulate in 2014.
After the war, upon his return to Falmouth, Milton joined the family business, Jake’s Tap in East Falmouth, and served as a Call-Fireman for Engine 5, East Falmouth for 50+ years. He was a skilled carpenter and delivered oil conscientiously to his customers for many years. Milton was a very humble and kind man. He enjoyed sports and the outdoors, and will be dearly missed tending to his yard and mowing his lawn on Davisville Rd. He was an active communicant of St. Anthony’s church.
Milton leaves behind his daughter Susan J. (Soares) Sargent of Dennis, his sons, Gary William (Kathleen), M. Reginald (Terry) of Hatchville, his three grandchildren, Melissa, Jacob and Matthew and his two great- granddaughters. Milton also leaves his son-in- law Richard and his wife Cheryl D’Egidio of Falmouth his daughter in law Susan D’ Egidio and her late husband William of Keene, NH and three step granddaughters Angela, Dawn and Erika and a grandson Michael (deceased) as well as many nieces and nephews and special friendships including his beloved cat Alley, Milton is predeceased by his sister Helen D. Grant of Edgartown and his brother William K. Soares of East Falmouth
Visiting hours will be held from 3-6 PM on Tuesday, Nov 14 at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 584 West Falmouth Hwy (Route 28A), WEST FALMOUTH. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 AM on Wednesday, Nov 15 at St. Anthony’s Church, 167 East Falmouth Hwy (Route 28), East Falmouth. Burial will follow in St. Anthony’s Cemetery.
