Nancye H. Dawley

Nancye Louise (Hertnick) Dawley, 84, of Yarmouth Port, MA, passed away at her home on February 10, 2020. Her loving family and her devoted dachshunds were by her side.

A daughter of the late John W. and Margaret A. (Check) Hertnick, Nancye was born in Steubenville, OH, on February 20, 1935. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Joan Patricia “Patty” Greco on September 11, 2005.

Nancye’s early years were spent in her hometown of Weirton, West Virginia.   She graduated from the Mount de Chantal Visitation Academy in Wheeling, West Virginia, in 1952.  She received her Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy from the Medical College of Virginia.

Nancye was a registered physical therapist and the retired owner of the Village Gift Shop in West Dennis, MA. She was one of the founders of Scargo Nursery School in South Dennis, MA, now known as The Scargo School.

In her retirement years, Nancye became an avid cyclist. In 2000 and 2001, she participated in the “Last Gasp Charity Ride,” where she raised over 1000 dollars by riding from Sandwich to Provincetown.  Nancye was a member of the Cape Cod Ski Club and volunteered at the Yarmouth Port Library. 

Nancye most recently spoke with great joy and enthusiasm about the healing power of therapy dogs and the beautiful friendships that she developed across the Cape with other therapy dog owners.  Nancye, along with her fellow handlers and dogs, brought smiles to many faces of residents of nursing homes, daycare centers, schools, and libraries. She was the Director of Therapy Dogs International Chapter 253.  

Nancye will be remembered with love by her two sons, Jack and Sarah Dawley of Concord, MA, and Joseph and Michelle Dawley of Pittsburgh, PA; her two daughters, Nancye and Michael Yoest of Foxboro, MA, and Mary Dawley of Newton, MA; her eight special grandchildren, Liza, Anna, Maggie,  Abby, Sean, Jordan, Ryan, and Liam; her nieces and nephew; Michelle and Walt Galloway, Mary, and Jeffry Zick and John and Susan Greco; and last but not least her beloved dachshunds, Gunther and Wynston and her cat Cassie.

A memorial service will be held at The Dennis Union Church on March 2, 2020, at 11:00 A.M.  The family will host a lunch reception following the service at Encore Bistro in Dennis.

A committal service and Interment will be in Chestnut Ridge Cemetery, Florence, PA.
