Paul Joseph Ballam of East Harwich, known by many family and friends as P.J., passed away peacefully Saturday evening, August 17, 2019, after a brave battle with Parkinson’s disease and Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. He was the beloved husband of Frances Ballam of 60 years.
A veteran of the United States Armed Forces, P.J. served in the Army during the Korean Conflict before making a career with the Massachusetts Air National Guard’s 102nd Fighter Interceptor Wing with whom he served in France during the Berlin crisis and supported for more than 40 years at Logan Airport and later at Otis Air National Guard in Mashpee as a Senior Master Sergeant.
When not engrossed in home or auto repair, both at which he was particularly effective, P.J. enjoyed golf, fishing, his exceptional garden, cooking and admirably, offering a helping hand to his neighbors. Most importantly P.J. was committed to caring and providing for his family. P.J. and his wife Frances recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 13, 2019 surrounded by family and friends. P.J. and Frances’ tenderness and enduring partnership, particularly over these last several years has been an inspiration to all of their children.
It is with great thanks and love that we send him off, cherishing all the years we had and remembering his motto “we can do anything, the impossible just takes a little longer.”
In addition to his devoted wife Frances, grateful affection survives with his daughters, Susan F. (Brian) Benoit of Morrisville, VT, and Joanne M. (Stephen) Doncaster of Stowe, VT; his sons Gregory Paul Ballam of Yarmouth, MA, Mark Joseph Ballam (Ross Lopez) of San Diego, CA, and Paul William Ballam (Kimberly Copp) of Chicago, IL; as well as five grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and grandpuppies. P.J. was predeceased by his father, William M. Ballam, his loving mother, Evelyn R. Ballam, his brother William M. Ballam, and his cherished dog named Miss Duff.
