Centerville - Pauline Childs passed away on May 1st at the age of 89. Born in Weymouth, MA, Pauline was the daughter of the late Levi R. and Margaret G. (Hurtin) Olson. A middle child of seven, she was raised in Rockland, MA and graduated from Rockland High School in 1947.
In 1951 Pauline married the late Robert L. Childs of Centerville where they settled and built their family home. Pauline was the office manager for their family business of 39 years, Childs Moving & Storage. A fierce advocate of her children, she actively lobbied the late Senator Ted Kennedy’s office for support for children with severe disabilities, to fight for the needs of her daughter and other children like her. A rabid sports fan, one of Pauline’s fondest and often recalled memories was being taken to Fenway Park to watch Ted Williams by her late Uncle Ozzie. She also took an active role in supporting her children’s athletic activities, including being an active member of the Barnstable Quarterback Club during the 1970s and again in the late 1980s to help root on her three boys.
Pauline was well-known for her competitive spirit when playing cards and other games with her friends and family. Always playing to win, then gently rubbing it in. Fond of arts and crafts, she spent countless hours doing needlecraft, ceramics and other art forms, making special gifts for her loved ones and friends.
Pauline is survived by her siblings, Virginia C. Olson and Samuel H. Olson of Norwell, MA and preceded in death by her sisters Eleanor F. Olson and Barbara A. Olson of Norwell, MA and her brothers Thomas E. Olson of Falmouth, MA and John R. Olson of Rockland, MA. She is also preceded in death by her late husband of 55 years Robert L. Childs, and survived by three daughters, Susan Elworthy of Craigville, MA, Nancy Childs of Assonent, MA and Diane Drinkwater of Centerville; three sons, Brian P. Childs of Marstons Mills, Edward L. Childs of Norton, MA and Robert L. Childs, Jr. of Toronto, CA, and eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and many nephews and nieces.
A memorial service will be held at Our Lady of Victory Church, 230 South Main Street, Centerville, MA on Saturday May 5 at 10 a.m. An interment ceremony will be held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, at date to be determined.
