Peter Wesley McIntire

Peter Wesley McIntire, 81, of Chatham, MA, and Koloa, HI, passed away December 2nd, after a brief illness, or as Pete would say “want of breath.”  He was the husband of Marcia (Eldredge) McIntire for 57 years.

Born in Newton to the late Winnifred (Reed) and Wesley McIntire, and raised in Natick, MA, receiving his Eagle Scout badge in 1955, and graduating from Natick High School in 1957.

Peter served in the U.S. Navy Seabees Battalion, in the early 1960s, in Cuba and Puerto Rico.

He moved to Chatham, MA, in 1963, becoming a “wash ashore” and known for the first few decades he lived in Chatham as “Marcia Eldredge’s husband” and “Norman Eldredge’s son-in-law.” He worked for M.F. Roach Company in Eastham, until he started his own excavating business in 1970, Peter W. McIntire and Sons Excavating in Chatham.  Prior to the building’s move to Race Point, Pete was a caretaker of the Old Harbor Lifesaving Station, on North Beach, in Chatham, in the 1970s. He continued to enjoy weekends on North Beach, with a community of beloved camp owners and RV campers.  Throughout his life, he also enjoyed watching car racing, whether at New England race tracks, or on television.  Retiring in 2007, Pete and Marcia split their time between Chatham, and Koloa, Hawaii, on the beautiful island of Kauai.

Peter is survived by his four children, Jennifer Kogut and her husband Andrew, of Chatham, David and his wife Margaret, of Chatham, Ken and his wife Molly, of Chatham, and Rebecca Drucker and her husband David, of Franklin.  And eight grandchildren, Nicholas Welsh of San Diego, CA, Ian Kogut of Chatham, Ryann and Matthew McIntire of Chatham, Layne and Cooper McIntire of Chatham, and Wynne and Josie Drucker ofFranklin.

His family is grateful for the care and kindness provided by the Chatham Fire Rescue Department, and the medical staff at Cape Cod Hospital.

Due to Covid restrictions, burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Peter’s memory to the Global Lyme Alliance, www.globallymealliance.org, 1290 East Main Street, 3rd Floor, Stamford, CT 06902, or to Monomoy Community Services, www.monomoy.org, 166 Depot Road, Chatham, MA 02633.
