Phyllis P. Nixon

BOURNE – Phyllis (Harding) Hunt Nixon, 100, of Buzzards Bay, formerly of Wareham, passed away on Sept. 1, 2019 at the Royal Cape Cod Nursing Home in Bourne after a period of declining health. She fought many obstacles right until the end.  She was born on July 9, 1919 in Dartmouth, MA.

She was the daughter of the late Caleb S. and Charlotte “Lottie” M. (Wilson) Harding.

Phyllis grew up in Bournedale (an area between Bourne and Plymouth that borders Great Herring Pond).  She was educated in the Bourne School System.  She was the youngest child of 10.  Growing up in a native American family, her family survived by fishing, hunting and gardening on their land known as The Reservation.

She was the Elder of the Herring Pond Wampanoag Tribe and just recently celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends.

She loved God and the Creator.  Phyllis was a member of the former Pondville Indian Baptist Church in Plymouth and the Emmanuel Church of the Nazarene in East Wareham.

Phyllis had been a resident of the Royal Cape Cod Nursing Home since 2015.  It was quite an adjustment for her at first but that’s when her artistic talents came to light. She looked forward to weekly arts and crafts and couldn’t wait to show her family her paintings, ceramics and jewelry.

Survivors include her children, Rodney P. Hunt, Sr. of New Bedford, Harry J. Hunt and his wife Anna of Osterville, Kathleen P. Hunt and Roy W. Nixon both of Wareham; 62 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren and  13 great great grandchildren; many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. She was the mother of the late Robert Hunt, William D. Hunt, Jr., and Raymond Nixon and she was the sister of the late Alonzo Harding, Bernard Harding, Clinton Harding, Freeman Harding, Gertrude Fernandes, Harriet Powell, Inez Mills, Maurice “Buster” Harding and Verna Harding.

Visiting hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 9, 2019 in the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Hwy., Wareham. Her funeral will be held at 11:00 in the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Old Indian Burial Ground, Bourne.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Fidelis Hospice, 25 Railroad Sq., Suite 501, Haverhill, MA 01832 or to the Herring Pond Wampanoag Tribe, 128 Herring Pond Rd., Plymouth, MA 02360.
