Ramona V. DeFilippis, 78, of Mashpee, died peacefully in her home on September 11, 2020 surrounded by her family. She was the beloved wife of the late Nicholas DeFilippis, Jr., for whom she shared 60 wonderful years together.
Ramona was born May 31, 1942 to the late Raymond and June (Harrison) Manton. Ramona was born and raised in Boston and upon graduating high school she attended Simmons College and received her bachelor’s degree. She continued in her educational pursuits and received her master’s degree in education from Lesley College.
Ramona was a lifelong educator. She began her longtime career as a teacher in Boston, and upon moving to the Cape continued teaching in the Falmouth school system as a first-grade teacher for many years. Her students knew her best as “Mrs. D.” and she was well loved and well respected by her students. She so enjoyed teaching first grade as she truly believed she was able to give her students their start in life. After many years teaching, Ramona became the Vice Principal of the Lawrence School, and eventually became the Principal of East Falmouth Elementary until her retirement.
Ramona was an avid reader, her children fondly remember books always surrounding their mother, not only books she read for her own enjoyment but books she read to her students and incorporated into her teaching. Ramona loved to crochet and loved everything about living here on the Cape. More than anything, Ramona loved being “Mrs. D.”. Teaching was truly her passion in life, and often she brought her work home encouraging her family to help create bulletin board artwork, or to help her make copies well after the school day had ended. Her love for her family and for students is what Mrs. D. will be remembered for most.
Ramona is survived by her son, Michael V. DeFilippis, and wife Cheryl, of Waquoit, MA; her daughter, Leslie A. Khwaja, and husband Mahmood, of Waban, MA; her four grandchildren, Michael Jr., Nekea, James, and Sarah; and two great grandchildren, Elijah and Austin. She was predeceased by her husband, Nicholas DeFilippis, Jr, and son Anthony N. DeFilippis.
