The Rev. Daniel P. Freitas, late of Chatham, and most recently of Yarmouth Port, MA, died after a brief illness at Cape Cod Hospital on October 18, 2018. The son of the late Daniel Freitas and the late Isabel Freitas, Rev. Freitas grew up in Somerville, MA and graduated from Somerville High School. Rev. Freitas attended Ohio Wesleyan University and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Union College and a Masters of Divinity degree from Duke University. Ordained by the United Methodist Church in 1965, Rev. Freitas served congregations in North Carolina, Medford, Spencer, Chicopee, Springfield, Oxford, Chatham, Orleans, and Oak Bluffs, Martha’s Vineyard, MA.
A man of profound faith all his life, Rev. Freitas’ favorite Bible verse was Romans 8:28, “We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to His purpose.”
Rev. Freitas was active in the Rotary Club, Bible study, and many other civic organizations. He was also a Freemason. Rich in friends, Rev. Freitas enjoyed several hobbies such as walking, biking, tai chi, painting, playing the violin, antiquing, and gardening. He had a vast knowledge of art, ship models, and antique clocks.
Rev. Freitas is survived by his wife of fifty-five years, Bonnie Sue (Diehl) Freitas, of Chatham and most recently of Yarmouth Port, MA; his daughter Mary Beth Hunt, and her husband, David, of Chatham, MA; his daughter Julia Freitas Neri, and her husband, Michael, of Hockessin, DE; grandchildren, Alena Danielle Hunt, of Chatham, MA and Nicole Elizabeth Neri and Tyler Vincent Neri, of Hockessin, DE; brother Richard E. Freitas, and his wife Helen, of Summerfield, FL; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 27, 2018 at 11 AM at the First United Methodist Church in Chatham, MA, with a reception in the church hall to be held immediately following. Burial at Evergreen Cemetery will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the First United Methodist Church of Chatham, 16 Cross Street, Chatham, MA 02633.
