Richard E. McVay

Richard E. McVay, 88 of East Falmouth, formerly of Dedham, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, March 21, 2020. He was the son of the late Francis V. McVay and Mary F. Conway of Pawtucket, RI. Beloved husband to the late Geraldine (Shea) McVay, he is survived by his daughter Ann M. Driscoll of East Falmouth, his daughter Janet M. Pratt and her husband Derek of East Falmouth and his grandsons, James G. Driscoll and Ethan R. Pratt. He was predeceased by his son, Richard E. McVay, Jr., and his six siblings.

Dick was raised in Pawtucket, RI, attended Providence Country Day School and was a 1953 graduate of The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. He was drafted following graduation and served 2 years in the Army, attaining the rank of sergeant. Following discharge, he returned to school and graduated from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in 1961. He practiced dentistry in Islington, MA for 40 years prior to retiring to Falmouth.

Dick loved to laugh and was often the life of family parties. He had an undeniable passion for golf and was a long-time member at The Woods Hole Golf Club. He was known for his colorful golf sweaters and socks. He loved playing the piano though he never learned to read music. He had a special place in his heart for Falmouth Heights where he spent summers as a child, served as head lifeguard and met his future wife. He enjoyed swimming and could often be found doing laps between the jetties at the end of the street. Above all else, he looked forward to spending time with his two grandsons, often chauffeuring them to and from school and their many activities. Dick was a parishioner at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in East Falmouth. In addition to family and friends, Dick (like his late wife) was blessed to have a team of dedicated caregivers to whom he was deeply grateful.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11am on August 21, 2020 at St. Anthony’s Church, 167 East Falmouth Highway, East Falmouth, MA. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Dick’s memory may be made to Neighborhood Falmouth, PO Box 435, Falmouth, MA 02541 – an organization near and dear to his heart.
