Richard S. Cahoon
1924 ∼ 2017
Richard “Dick” Cahoon passed away peacefully on February 14th at the age of 92. He was born in Brockton, MA, and lived his early years in Rockland. His family relocated to Fairhaven where he attended grade school and Fairhaven High School, playing varsity football and earning several accolades for achievement.
After high school he proudly joined the Marines and spent the next several years in the Pacific during WWII. On his return from the war he met his future wife, Ruth, to whom he was married 50 years until her passing in 1997. They settled in Dedham and raised three children. He worked through the years as an auto mechanic and body man, then became an Insurance appraiser in the late 60’s, finally retiring around 2005. Later in life he was re-acquainted with Marie, an old family friend and they were able to spend several happy years together until her passing in 2011.
He enjoyed going to the campground in Vermont where he kept a camper next to his Brother Bob, attending many of his Marine Corps reunions and trips to CT. and Maryland to be with his brothers.
He was pre-deceased by his wife Ruth, his partner Marie, his Brothers Dave and Bob, his Daughter Linda and his Grandson Craig. He is survived by his Son Richard and his wife Marilyn, his daughter Susan and her husband Dick, his Son in law Bill, his Grandchildren, Lisa and her husband Dennis, Rick and his wife Jenn, Brian and his wife Melissa, Kim and her husband Jared, and Melanie and her husband Will, Great Grandchildren Shalynn and Joffrey, Jocelyn and TJ, Morgan, Cameron, Robbie, Cody, Curt, Colton, Paige, Jade, Ricky, Kate, Kaedyn, Cayden , Lucas, Charlotte, Evie, Mathiu, Guilherme, and Great-Great Grandchildren Maddie and Kanisse. Dick is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and friends.
Family and friends are cordially invited to the Prophett-Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 35 Spring St. East Bridgewater for a visitation period on Friday, February 17th from 4-8pm. A funeral home service will be held on Saturday, February 18th at 11:00am. Immediately following the service there will be a celebration of Dick's life at the Whitman Legion, 33 Legion Pkwy, Whitman, MA 02382. Due to the snow the burial will be held at a later date at Brook Dale Cemetery, Dedham.
