Robert J. Marks Jr.

Robert J. Marks, Jr., 73, of Marston’s Mills, passed peacefully on Sunday, November 15, 2020, surrounded by his loving family. Bob, as he was known to most, was born on November 6, 1947, on Nantucket, the son of Gertrude and Robert J. Marks, Sr.. Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 34 years, Karen. He is also survived by his sister Linda, his sisters and brothers-in-law, his loving nieces and nephews and many treasured life-long friends.

Growing up on Nantucket, Bob cultivated his enduring passions as an avid sportsman, pilot, and craftsman. He was happiest at the helm of a fishing boat, flying a plane, or sitting by a campfire with friends.

Bob proudly served in the United States Army with the 82nd Airborne during the Vietnam War. Soon thereafter, he became a Federal Game Warden on Nantucket. He pursued his love of flying as a pilot, later becoming Director of Operations at Gull Air in Hyannis, MA.

Bob, together with his wife Karen, founded Oak & Ivory in Osterville in 1985, designing and creating Nantucket Lightship Baskets. Their business grew to include finely crafted items by local artisans.

Bob semi-retired in 2014 to spend more time in his woodworking shop, hunting, fishing, and exploring at his much-loved cabin, Streamside, in the deep woods of New Hampshire.

It is impossible to sum up the life of an extraordinary man in a couple of paragraphs. To those who knew and loved Bob, he was this and so much more. Bob, we will miss your humor, gentle smile, love of our country and will hold you in our hearts forever.

Bob will be laid to rest at the Massachusetts National Cemetery. Due to COVID restrictions, services will be private.

A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at a future date.

The Marks family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation and admiration to the doctors, nurses and the entire healthcare staff at Massachusetts General Hospital for their exceptional care during his courageous battle with Leukemia.
