Rodney James Whitney

Rodney James Whitney, age 87, passed peacefully at home on October 9, 2017. Beloved husband of Donna (DiDomenico) Whitney.

Born to Charles and Esther Whitney in Beloit Wisconsin, one of nine children, Rod joined the Navy in 1948 and was a radar man first class on the USS Witek 848, stationed in New London Connecticut and Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. He married Joan O'Hara (deceased) in 1951 and together they had four children; Attorney Lynn Whitney of New Bedford, Brian J Whitney of Daytona Beach Florida, Anne Liberti of Anson, Maine, and Teresa Whitney of Haverhill Massachusetts.

After leaving the Navy, Rod worked for Raytheon from 1952 to 1958. He graduated from Northeastern University night school in 1958 and joined Microwave Associates in Burlington. Rod worked his way up to vice president of sales of Ma/Com before retiring in 1991.

Upon his retirement, he and Donna moved to Cape Cod with their two dogs, enjoying the companionship of many good friends to whom he was a trusted confidante and advisor. Rod and Donna joined the Hyannis Yacht Club where many new friendships began. He enjoyed golfing, boating, and was exceptionally well read.

Rod also leaves his sister, Beverly Brown of Sparks, Nevada, his sister-n-law Carol Whitney of Beloit, Wisconsin, nine grandchildren; Derek Adair, Brianne McKay, William McKay Jr., Jade McKay, Rodney Fraser, Elizabeth Fraser, Anthony Liberti, Ugo Liberti and Maria Liberti as well as eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He will be sorely missed.

Visiting hours will be from 4 to 8 pm on Thursday, October 12th in the Chapman Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 74 Algonquin Ave., Mashpee.  A graveside service will be on Friday at 10:15 in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.  A funeral procession will gather at the funeral home at 9 am on Friday.
