1924 ∼ 2019
Rosalyn (Zeman) Brooks was born to Milton and Edna (Kohn) of New Bedford on March 24, 1924. She received her secretarial training in New Bedford and later during World War II married her childhood sweetheart, the late Robert Brooks. After the war, she and Robert moved to Cape Cod where he was able to paint and was well known for his marine subjects. Rosalyn was employed as a secretary in the Girl Scout office in Hyannis in the mid 1950’s and several years later joined the advertising department at the Cape Cod Times where she wrote a shopping column. When her children were grown, she became a real estate agent, and also assisted her husband for many years at The Robert Brooks Art Gallery in Hyannis.
Always eager to learn after retiring, Rosalyn became certified to teach osteoporosis prevention exercises which she taught at the Barnstable Senior Center in Hyannis for two years. She was also a volunteer at the Cape Cod Hospital for seven years.
She was a lover of all animals large and small. She enjoyed being with her family and friends and raised her children to care for anyone who needed help whether a human or animal.
She leaves her daughters Helen Gempel of West Palm Beach, FL and Karen Rubino and her husband Jeffrey of Hyannis. She was the mother of the late Peter Brooks of Hyannis who died in 1968. She leaves her grandchildren Gary Kaye and wife Marietta of Phoenix, AZ, Miles Hathorn and wife Heather of Owensboro, KY, Peter Rubino and wife Meagan of Wendell, NC, Michael Rubino of South Boston, MA and Elizabeth Rubino Dinh and husband Nam of Wakefield, MA and eleven great-grandchildren.
She was sister to the late Selma (Sally) Lacob, Millicent Shuster and her husband Abbott and Helen Zeman all of New Bedford and was an aunt to several nieces and nephews.
She also was a dear companion for many years to the late Paul Bostwick of Yarmouth Port. A long-time member of the Cape Cod Synagogue, she was a member of WRJ and a life member of Hadassah. Funeral Service will be 11 am Thursday, February 14, 2019 at Cape Cod Synagogue, 145 Winter St., Hyannis, MA with burial to follow at Mosswood Cemetery, Cotuit, MA.
