Ruth E. Woodward

Ruth E. Woodward, age 93, of North Falmouth passed away Monday, November 16, 2020. She was the beloved wife of the late Richard H. Woodward who died November 14, 2003.

Born in Brockton, MA on March 26, 1927, she was the loving daughter of the late William J. Sullivan and Etta Martin Sullivan. Raised in Brockton, Massachusetts, she attended Brockton High School and the Katherine Gibbs School, and later received her bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Ruth and her family lived for many years in Cheshire, CT and she and her husband retired to North Falmouth 23 years ago. Her family has owned a beach “cottage” at New Silver Beach, North Falmouth, MA for over 65 years. The cottage was a place she treasured, and she passed that love on to her children and grandchildren.

She was an independent career woman and proud of her roles at Hale and Dorr Law Firm, and as a service rep for BELL Telephone covering the Cape and Islands. As she shifted her role to the loving management of raising her 4 daughters, she volunteered at their local schools in various capacities, always wanting to be of service.

Ruth was an active communicant of her local Catholic parish wherever she lived, St. Elizabeth Seton in North Falmouth being dear to her heart. Whether it was driving people to Mass, being a church greeter, delivering bulletins, she always wanted to be of service. She was compassionately involved with the St. Vincent de Paul Society for many years, which brought her much joy.

It was Ruth’s family that brought sparkle to her incredible blue eyes - family, fun, generosity, compassion, constant acts of kindness big and small, and love of life were gifts she lavished on them all.

Ruth is survived by her children, Ann Donovan and husband James of Westford, MA, Katherine Hall and husband Harvey of Raleigh, NC, Mary Gallicano and husband William of Butte, MT, and Joan Woodward of North Falmouth, MA. She leaves her loving sister Barbara Toomey of North Easton, MA, and is predeceased by her loving brother William J. Sullivan, Jr. She was the most wonderful grandmother to Melissa Gilbert, and husband Kevin, of Lafayette Hill, PA, Jimmy Donovan and his wife Kate of Stowe, VT, Sean Donovan and his wife Katie of Richmond, VT, Will Hall of Raleigh, NC, Max Gallicano of Butte, MT and her precious great grandchildren, Jack, Pete and Mae Gilbert and Noah Donovan. She is survived by many cherished and loving nieces, nephews and friends, a testament to a life well-loved and lived.

The family wishes to thank with gratitude the staff at Heritage at Falmouth where Ruth lived the last 3 years. We also thank the providers at Melrose Wakefield Hospital for their compassionate care in her final days.

Ruth’s funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, November 28, 2020 at 11 AM in St. Elizabeth Seton, Church, 481 Quaker Road, North Falmouth, MA, burial to follow.
