Sarah Chalmers Grayson, of Falmouth, beloved wife, mother, and friend, passed away last Monday after a courageous battle with cancer. She was 43. Sarah was born in Scituate to Stephen and Janet Burt Chalmers. After spending summers in Falmouth, her family moved there full time when she was 12. She attended Falmouth Academy and graduated from Brewster Academy before heeding the call of the mountains of Colorado and Jackson Hole, Wyoming. She often said that she never regretted one day of skiing out there. Sarah moved back to Falmouth and before being married in 2004 converted to Catholicism, which was a great source of strength for her and her family.
Sarah loved hosting family and friends at her home for dinner, visits or maybe just to keep them all in line. She somehow managed to keep the three kids' activities straight while managing her own cancer treatment. Sarah was born to be a mom, and cherished each day with her children.
Sarah was always an athlete, never a cancer patient. She was an eternal optimist. Even her blood type was "B positive," which she would happily tell you! Sarah was utterly focused on beating her cancer with mind, body, and Faith. Sarah loved the ocean. Although she claimed not to enjoy sailboat racing, she just went fast in her wedding present, a Herreshoff 12½ named Swizzle, even winning races between chemotherapy treatments. A life long member of the Quissett Yacht Club, she was involved with the Junior Sailing Program and enjoyed watching her kids growing up around the harbor she loved and that her family had enjoyed for generations. She was also a member of the Quissett Harbor House Land Trust, the Quamquissett Beach Club and the Woods Hole Golf Club.
Sarah is survived by her husband Edward (Ted) Grayson Jr. and daughters Jancy 11, Isabelle 8, and son Hunter 5, her father Stephen Chalmers of Falmouth, her brother Jeremy Chalmers and his wife Dawn Lea of Philadelphia, Mississippi, in-laws, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her mother Janet Burt Chalmers.
A wake will be held from 4:00 -7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 13 at Chapman, Cole & Gleason funeral home, 584 West Falmouth Hwy (Route 28A) in West Falmouth and a funeral Mass at St. Anthony Church, 167 East Falmouth Hwy in East Falmouth on Saturday, January 14 at 10:00 a.m. Interment following the Mass will be private. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, please continue to offer your prayers for Sarah.
