Sergeant Major Timothy E. Smith (Ret.), 66, of Mashpee, Massachusetts, lost his battle with lung cancer on July 5, 2018.
Sergeant Major Smith was born at El Paso, Texas, in 1952, to the late Chief Command Master Sergeant Ernest L. Smith and Anna E. Smith. He enlisted in 1970 into the United States Navy and served two tours of duty during the Vietnam War on the USS Vancouver. In 1976, he reenlisted into the United States Army and served in Germany with the 2nd Battalion / 67th Air Defense Artillery Regiment. In 1982, he joined the Massachusetts Army National Guard as a unit training non-commissioned officer and rose to the rank of Sergeant Major, culminating his career as the Command Sergeant Major of the 1-182nd Infantry Regiment and then the G-4 Sergeant Major for the Massachusetts Army National Guard.
He graduated from Sharon High School, has a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Anna Maria College, and a Master’s Degree in Education from Endicott College. Additionally, he held numerous military occupational specialties including infantrymen, logistician, and engineer, and was a graduate of the Sergeant Major Academy, class 34. His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal (5th Award), the Army Achievement Medal (6th Award), the Vietnam Service Medal (3 Bronze Service Stars), and he was inducted into the Order of Saint Martin.
After retirement in 2005, he pursued his passions in fine woodworking particularly in boat building and lathe crafts; challenged his friends and family to backgammon; and enjoyed baking; fishing; and, rock hunting. His greatest passion was spending time with his family, particularly with his granddaughters.
He leaves behind his wife, Jo Anne of 39 years, his son Adam, daughter-in-law Crystal, and granddaughter Astoria of Sandwich, MA; his son Benjamin, and his daughter-in-law Stephanie of Boston, MA; his daughter, Anna, of Mashpee, MA; and, his daughter Elaina, son-in-law Andrew, and granddaughter, Alice of Plymouth, MA.
The family will hold a private wake followed by his burial at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, Massachusetts with full military honors on Wednesday, July 11, 2018 at 10:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Judes Childrens Hospital.
