Virginia G. Goddard

GODDARD, Virginia G. (Utudjian), Age 93, recently of Buzzards Bay, MA and formerly of Hanover, MA for 52 years, passed away peacefully on June 15, 2018.

Ginny, as she like to be called, was born in Braintree, MA to Hambartzum (Harry) Utudjian and Shushan (Susan) Utudjian (Davidian), Armenian immigrants from Constantinople, Turkey.  One of four daughters, Ginny grew up in Braintree, MA during the Great Depression and graduated from Braintree High School in the class of 1942.  During WWII, she was a USO dancer and worked for the Army Quartermaster Corps at the World Trade Center in Boston.  After the war, she married her high school sweetheart Robert Ulvila, also of Braintree.  While raising a son as a single mother in the 50s and early 60s, she worked at Sigma Instruments in Braintree until she married a second time to Phil Goddard of Needham, MA.  They settled in Hanover in 1963 in a home that they built which is where she lived until she was 90, later moving to Keystone Place in Buzzards Bay.

Ginny was an independent, vibrant woman who was very active well into her late 80s, always ready with a quick smile, hearty laugh or a compassionate hug and talk.  She enjoyed bowling, tennis, going to the spa and dancing and was a leader in South Shore Singles.  A talented singer, Ginny sang in church choirs in Braintree and in Hanover where she was in the choir at the First Congregational Church of Hanover for 28 years.

Ginny was a loving daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother and aunt to a large blended family for whom she was a matriarch who helped bind everyone together.  She was also a dear friend to the many people whom she knew from all of her activities and affiliations.

She is survived by her sons Bruce Ulvila of Plymouth, MA, Philip Alan Goddard of Monument Beach, MA, Warren Goddard of Beaufort, SC; daughters Judith Weherle of Galena, IL, Meredith Jane Wessels of Clear Lake, IA; grandchildren Matti Ulvila, Sara Goddard, John Goddard, Chris Wessels, Cary Wessels; great grandchildren Tyler Ulvila, Devin Ulvila, Alexander Wessels, Jordan Wessels, Jacob Wessels; great great grandchild Kyler Wessels; sister Shirley Utudjian; nieces Ginny Wals and Susan McAuliffe; and nephews John McAuliffe and Harry McAuliffe.
