Walter J. Conway

Walter James Conway, born July 17, 1937 and called to rest Saturday, September 12, 2020 at the age of 83. Of Falmouth, and formerly Bedford, MA, he was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Shirley Anne (Smith) Conway.

Walter is survived by his children and their families including Denise Amari, and husband Richard, of Windham, NH; Jeff Conway and his wife Shannan, of Falmouth, MA; Mary-Beth Donovan and her husband Michael, of Westborough, MA; and Tricia Haydon and her husband William, of Shorewood, MN.  Walter has 10 grandchildren, Alessandra and Gabrielle Amari; Sydney and Nicholas Conway; Colin, Declan and Quinn Donovan; and Sophia, Elizabeth and Andrew Haydon.

Walter was born in Boston, MA to Dennis and Ruth (Ahern) Conway. He is survived by his brother Dennie Conway and his wife Kathy, of Wallingford, CT.  He leaves four surviving sisters-in-law, Marie Louise Kanach, Suzanne (Harold) Poppe, Annette McCarthy, and Rosemary (Bill) Francis.  He was the dear cousin and life-long friend to Pat Hildebrandt and her husband, Fred.  Walter is the beloved uncle to numerous nieces and nephews.

After graduating from Assumption College, Walter had a career in Sales. Upon marrying Shirley, they settled in Bedford, where Walter was an active member of the community.  Walter was a coach for Bedford Youth Soccer, volunteered on numerous boards, and active within his parish, St. Michael’s, as a Religious Education teacher.  He continued his community involvement in Falmouth as a volunteer with St. Vincent de Paul Society and as part of the Fisherman’s Cove neighborhood association.

Walter will be remembered for his love of family and his pride in his grandchildren. His rich currency in friendships was deep and broad. He was always available with an encouraging word or quietly using his network to create an opportunity for those less advantaged. 

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00am on Friday, Sep. 18th at St. Anthony’s Church, 167 E. Falmouth Hwy (Rt. 28), in East Falmouth or online at Interment at St. Anthony's Cemetery.
