WEST YARMOUTH - Walter Ladislas Selens, 85, of West Yarmouth passed away peacefully on September 2, 2018, surrounded by his family, after battling many illnesses.
He was the loving husband of Janet (White) Selens. They had been married for 56 years.
Walter was born in Waterbury, Connecticut in 1932. He is predeceased by his parents Marian (Louise) and Walter Selens. He was educated in Waterbury schools and graduated from Quinnipiac College with a degree in Business Administration. He served in the Army from November 1956 to November 1958 and traveled in France and Germany. He drove an ambulance at the 97th General Hospital in Frankfort, Germany. He worked at Superior Electric in the Advertising Department where he met the love of his life, his wife Janet. He joined Stop and Shop and worked in many locations, which allowed he and his family to move to Cape Cod in 1970. He worked as a Deli Manager and Union Steward for almost 40 years, retiring in 1995.
Walter enjoyed his time taking many camping trips with his family. He loved fishing, ice fishing, shell fishing and crabbing. He spent many years gardening and was known for his green thumb. He was an avid reader and was a frequent customer at the local libraries. A lover of animals, he owned several cats over the years. He was a fan of the Red Sox, fun hats, plaid clothing and any type of dessert served to him.
He leaves his 5 children - daughter Debra Selens Hirbour and spouse Scot Hirbour from Milford, New Hampshire and Ellsworth, Maine; son Walter Selens and girlfriend Bonnie Downs from Gorham, Maine; son Keith Selens and girlfriend Gretchen Strong from South Yarmouth; son David Selens from Rockland, Mass; and son Jeffrey Selens and spouse Michelle Selens from Centerville, Mass. Grandchildren Alexander Hirbour and spouse Kristen; Emily Aylott and spouse Matthew; Katiana Selens, Willow Selens, Elizabeth Selens, Zachary Selens and Owen Selens. Great grandchildren Luke and Macie Aylott and Eleanora Hirbour. His sister Dawn Grady from Waterbury, Connecticut, and many cousins. He was predeceased by his granddaughter Lauren Michelle Selens.
Calling hours will be on September 15th from 10 to 11 am and a memorial service will immediately follow at Morris, O’Connor and Blute Funeral Home, 58 Long Pond Drive, South Yarmouth, Massachusetts.
