William Ross Searle, of Mashpee, artist and educator, was born in 1936 and raised on Martha's Vineyard Island. He grew up in Edgartown, attending Edgartown schools into high school, eventually graduating from Plainville, MA. High School in 1954. He served three years in the U. S. Army Signal Corps, as Sp3, and was a non-combatant Korean veteran, and an atomic veteran, participating in the Redwing hydrogen bomb test series on Eniwetok, 1956 - 1957.
After his military service years, he pursued his interest in art, earning his B.F.A. degree in painting and drawing from Massachusetts College of Art in 1961 and received his M.F.A. degree from Rhode Island School of Design in 1963. He taught art for 47 years, the last 33 years at Thayer Academy in Braintree, MA.
His paintings span over five decades and are included in over five hundred private, corporate, institutional and museum collections across the
United States, and Europe, including; West Point Museum; Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. Museum, Atlanta; New England Museum of Sports; Cape Cod Museum
Of Art; Cahoon Museum Of American Art; Heritage Museums And Gardens; Martha's Vineyard Historical Society Museum and Braintree Historical Society Museum, among others. He is listed in "Who's Who In America", "Who's Who In American Art", and "Who's Who In American Education".
He leaves his surviving wife Diane and a son, Gregory, his wife Stacy, and a grandchild, Connor, of Nashua, New Hampshire. Also, a daughter, Jennifer, her husband Ronny, and two grandchildren Alexander and Maya of Copenhagen, Denmark. He also leaves behind his sister Margaret of Martha's Vineyard and Alexander of Sandwich, and their families, as well as other extended family members. He was predeceased by his parents George Raymond and Margaret Anderson Searle and brothers George, Stewart, David, Robert and James.
A memorial service will take place at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 74 Algonquin Ave., (Rte 151), Mashpee on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 3:00 PM.
